Vietnam’s Coconut Exports to Exceed $1 Billion in 2024

The coconut industry in Vietnam has grown significantly, expanding from an export value of $180 million in 2010 to over $900 million in 2023. It is now projected to surpass $1 billion in 2024, as shared during the “Coconut Production and Consumption Connection Forum” in Ben Tre on December 13.

The industry spans nearly 200,000 hectares, becoming a key economic sector in the Mekong Delta and Central Coastal regions. Recent milestones include the acceptance of Vietnamese coconuts in the U.S. and EU markets, along with a protocol allowing fresh coconut exports to China.

China, consuming approximately 4 billion coconuts annually (2.6 billion fresh), is a crucial market due to its high demand and limited domestic supply. Vietnam benefits from lower transportation costs and trade agreements but faces challenges such as China’s stringent quality and safety standards and competition from Thailand and Indonesia.

To ensure sustainability, experts recommend enhancing product quality, diversifying markets, and leveraging free trade agreements to reduce risks tied to over-reliance on China.
