MANGO EXPORT PROSPRECTS IN THE MEKONG DELTA

Recently, mangoes from the provinces of Dong Thap, An Giang, and Can Tho have continuously been exported to demanding markets such as the United States, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Russia, Singapore, and China. Behind these achievements are the efforts, dedication, and passion of farmers who persistently adhere to export standards to achieve stable and sustainable development.

With an area of over 2,100 hectares of various types of mangoes, of which more than 1,000 hectares are green-skinned mangoes, farmers and authorities in Co Do District, Can Tho City, have often been troubled by having to “rescue” prices. However, through the persistent efforts of all parties involved, especially the determination and perseverance of the farmers, in mid-June 2024, the first two tons of green-skinned mangoes from Co Do District were officially exported to the Australian and American markets by air.

After more than 10 years of negotiation efforts, earlier, 7 tons of green-skinned tượng mangoes from Cho Moi District (An Giang) were officially exported to Australia and the United States at the end of January 2024. By early February and March 2024, farmers in Cho Moi and An Phu (An Giang) celebrated further success when 13 tons of seedless mangoes and 18 tons of keo mangoes were exported to South Korea.

Alongside preservation and transportation, most fresh fruit import markets have high product requirements. For example, the European Union (EU) market has very stringent demands regarding traceability and product quality standards, particularly food safety and hygiene. The European Commission (EC) frequently updates and changes regulations related to maximum pesticide residue levels, especially for fresh and frozen fruit products.

The official export of mangoes from the Mekong Delta to these demanding markets is only the beginning. There have been lessons about fruit exports that had to be pulled back shortly after due to short-term thinking. The ambition of farmers, authorities, and businesses is long-term and sustainable. To achieve this, producers need to change their mindset and production habits to meet market demands. Companies must prioritize integrity and reputation in their operations, while authorities must act as regulators, connectors, and market guides. Only then can mangoes, and other agricultural products in general, truly conquer the market.
