In 2025, durian continues to play a key role in driving Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable export sector, which set a record in 2024 with over $7 billion in revenue, a 27% increase from the previous year. Durian accounted for nearly half of the total export value, bolstered by China’s allowance of official durian imports from mid-2023. Additionally, frozen durian exports were approved in August 2024, further expanding growth opportunities.
Vietnam currently exports 15 main agricultural products to China, including durian, dragon fruit, and mango. China remains a key market, importing 20% of Vietnam’s agricultural exports from ASEAN. Efforts are underway to expand the export list to include products like pomelo, avocado, and pineapple.
The 2025 export target is $8 billion, a 15% growth over 2024. Durian is expected to maintain its leading position, with an anticipated 15% production growth driven by staggered planting cycles and improved cultivation techniques, particularly in the Central Highlands.
Frozen durian and fresh coconut, newly approved for export to China, are emerging as growth drivers. Exports of these items are expected to gain momentum in Q2 2025, meeting increased seasonal demand.
Challenges for 2025 include rising competition, notably from Indonesia, which may gain access to China’s durian market mid-year. Indonesia’s lower prices, averaging around 60,000 VND/kg, could pressure Vietnam’s export prices. However, Vietnamese durian retains an edge in quality, especially compared to Indonesia’s. Additional challenges include potential impacts from the U.S.-China trade tensions.
