Durian leads the fruit and vegetable group with an export turnover of more than 1.3 billion USD, up nearly 45% in the first 6 months of the year.
Durian, known as the “king of fruits,” is increasingly asserting its position as it is favored by China and many other countries.
According to the latest data from customs, in the first half of this year, durian exports reached 1.32 billion USD, up 45% over the same period last year. Durian currently accounts for 65% of the export fruit group.

Durian export prices have also increased sharply in the past 6 months, fluctuating between 4.3-4.5 USD (110,000-115,000 VND) per kg, depending on the market. Currently, the Monthong variety is popular thanks to its high quality, small seeds, delicious aroma, and non-mushy texture. The storage time of this variety is also longer than Ri 6 and other varieties.
Among the top 10 markets importing Vietnamese durian in the first half of the year, China took the lead with a turnover of 1.22 billion USD, accounting for 92.4%. Compared to the same period last year, durian exports to China increased by 46%. The Thai market ranked second, with 47 million USD, up 90.5% compared to the first half of 2023.
In addition to these two major markets, Japan and Cambodia also increased their purchases of Vietnamese durian. Japan spent 2.6 million USD, and Cambodia spent 1.6 million USD, increasing by 2 and 23 times, respectively, compared to the same period last year.
Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, said that durian is making a great contribution to the export turnover of fruits and vegetables.
The crop season in the Central Highlands from July to October is expected to help the export turnover of this fruit break out more this year. By the end of the year, durian exports could reach about 3 billion USD, bringing a large source of revenue for Vietnam and improving farmers’ lives.
Vietnamese and Chinese authorities have completed technical negotiations and will soon sign the Protocol on the export of frozen durian. In addition, products such as medicinal herbs, coconuts, and other frozen fruits will also be opened for import by China in the near future.
However, recently, many batches of Vietnamese durian have been warned of being contaminated with banned substances. Authorities are investigating the cause and discussing with the Chinese side.
Initial inspection results show that there is no cause originating from this growing area. Therefore, authorities recommend that businesses and traders strictly comply with purchasing regulations, ensure purchasing according to the growing area code, and that packaging facilities must comply with the standards of the importing country to maintain their position and possibly rise to the top.
